端 午 节 (Duān wǔ jié), the Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated on the 5th day of the 5th month of the traditional Chinese calendar, commemorates the life and death of the famous Chinese scholar Qu Yuan, who was a loyal minister of the King of Chu. According to the legend of Qu Yuan, Qu Yuan was devastated that his country and his people were rife with greed and corruption that he threw himself into the river and ended his life. After hearing of the tragic suicide of Qu Yuan, the local people raced along the river in their boats to look for his body. The people also threw Zongzi (rice dumplings) into the river for the fish to eat so that the fish would not feast on Qu Yuan's body. Every year the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated to commemorate this attempt at rescuing Qu Yuan.
This book tells the story of 端午节 or the Dragon Boat Festival in simple sentences in Mandarin Chinese with pinyin which will help children at the intermediate level to read by themselves and for reading aloud with beginners new to the language.
