The story of Mulan is based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, a legendary warrior who takes the place of her aging father to save him from death in the army. Mulan, originally described in the Ballad of Mulan, fought in the war for many years and became one of China's greatest heroines in the process. According to the ballad, when Mulan returned home she was devastated to discover her father had long died and her mother had since remarried. To make matters worse, the Khan (the then ruler) had summoned her to the palace to become his concubine. Rather than suffer this fate, Mulan commits suicide allegedly saying that "she would prefer death by her own hand to serving a foreign ruler."
This Disney's 1998 adaption of Mulan is definitely a more palatable introduction to the history of one of China’s greatest heroines and a source of inspiration for the younger generation championing gender equality.
