Chinese Schools

Most of the establishments listed here are non-profit Chinese community schools which are run in the same manner as a normal school. The timetable would track a state school's term times with approximately 33 lessons over three terms, on Saturdays or Sundays, starting from September to July and includes half-term breaks in each term. School hours are typically 2-3 hours with a 10 to 20-minute break in between.

Classes usually start from Reception for children age 4+ to GCSE level and occasionally up to A Levels. Lesson are conducted in Chinese (Mandarin or Cantonese - please check with individual schools), spoken and written, with simplified or traditional characters (again, depending on individual schools, so please check) with English explanation where necessary. It is not necessary to have any prior knowledge of the language for the reception classes, or the adult beginner classes. The teachers are usually parents who provide their time on a voluntary basis and are sponsored to attend regular teacher training courses. Fees start from GBP225.
